There seems to be a bit of a boom in the Hungarian folk scene right now, with some interesting new groups cropping up - Napra, for instance. The jazz-meets-folk group Tárkány Művek formed in 2008. A 2010-es esztendő egyik legérdekesebb hazai újdonságaként emlegette a könnyűzenei újságírás az azóta saját albumot megjelentető és jó pár élő koncertet is maga mögött tudó Kishúg nevű formációt. Assembled for Primás Parade is a supergroup of musicians drawn from the folk, jazz, rock and classical scenes with a common root in traditional music. An entire primás group does conjure up an Orwellian paradox: everyone is a primás but some are more primás than others.

Irreverent Hungarian magpies get nabbed by the folk cops
The opening track of this CD will need some explanation. There’s a snatch of the Monty Python theme tune on shepherds f lutes, followed by breaking glass, screaming sirens and a radio announcement warning that the ‘Folkrendorség’ (Folk Police) are coming to arrest the Fakutya band and locking them up. Telephone callers to the Folk Police get put on hold with Scott Joplin’s ‘The Entertainer’, which is then transformed into a Carpathian folktune.
